Inlet Management

Home > Services > Coastal Engineering > Inlet Management

Inlets in coastal areas are essential for navigation, providing boat access to areas significantly landward of the overall coastline. However, as many inlets are artificial, they often interrupt or modify the general coastal processes. Most importantly the longshore sediment transport is impacted, resulting in shoreline recession in the areas downdrift of an inlet.

Yet through careful design and correct management, inlet impacts and maintenance can be reduced significantly. Cummins | Cederberg has experience in both the analysis of inlet processes and management of inlets such as implementing bypass systems.
