Storm Surge Impacts

Home > Services > Coastal Engineering > Storm Surge Impacts

Storm surge is the effect of strong landward wind and waves, which essentially pushes water towards land resulting in increased water levels. In the Caribbean region storm surge is generally associated with hurricanes, while in other areas it might follow intense winter storms.

Storm surge impacts can be devastating and expensive. Besides the increased water levels, waves and strong currents can impact areas further landward resulting in infrastructure damage and deposition of material.

As the storm surge level depends on wind, wave, tide and pressure conditions, complex analyses and expertise are required within each area, which are all part of Cummins | Cederberg core services.
