Cummins Cederberg conducted a feasibility study on behalf of the West Coast Inland Navigation District (WCIND) to assess potential maintenance dredging needs along approximately 6,700 linear feet of the western portion of Phillippi Creek in Sarasota, Florida. The study supports future design, permitting, and construction phases.

The primary objective was to evaluate existing conditions through field investigations, including bathymetric surveys, geotechnical borings, sediment chemistry analysis, and natural resource surveys. The study also identified shoaling areas based on previously authorized dredge depths, estimated dredge volumes, evaluated material management strategies, summarized regulatory permitting requirements, and provided an opinion of probable costs to inform WCIND decision-making.

In August 2024, Tropical Storm Debby caused significant flooding in Sarasota County, prompting an updated bathymetric survey. The survey expanded the original 6,700-linear feet scope to approximately 33,000 linear feet, extending north to the Beneva Road bridge/Pinecraft neighborhood. This update revealed changes in shoaling and dredge volumes within the original limits and established baseline conditions for the expanded area. A desktop engineering analysis was also performed to assess sedimentation patterns and stormwater impacts.

The expanded feasibility study was completed in February 2025. Cummins Cederberg has obtained all permits, developed the construction plans and specs, a contractor was awarded, and the WCIND Phillippi Creek Maintenance dredging project is anticipated to commence in April of 2026. Cummins Cederberg will contribute on construction engineering and inspection and will also be assisting with closeout.
