Cummins Cederberg provided coastal engineering services, conducting multiple mooring and coastal engineering analyses for various cruise ship terminals and vessel types, including Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway Plus Class, and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Destroyer Class vessels. These assessments were performed at existing docks in Juneau, Seward, and Kodiak, Alaska, and involved evaluating waves, currents, and wind forces on moored cruise and military vessels.
For the existing berth at AJ Dock and the newly proposed dock at Aak’w Landing, a numerical model analysis was performed using the MIKE 21 Mooring Analysis (MA) modeling system to evaluate dynamic mooring loads. The analysis applied design environmental conditions to the Quantum Class and Breakaway Plus Class vessels, assessing the impact of waves, currents, and wind forces on vessel motions and mooring loads. Coastal design conditions were developed to maintain the structural integrity of the mooring components, with mooring arrangements optimized to minimize vessel movements during adverse extreme event conditions.
A mooring analysis was conducted for the proposed berth locations in Seward, Alaska. The engineering team analyzed wind-generated waves and performed both static and dynamic mooring analyses, applying the design environmental conditions to Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class vessel at the existing NCL facility and a newly proposed site. The study identified optimal mooring configurations and bollard locations that balanced structural integrity with vessel stability under both normal and extreme conditions.
At Women’s Bay, Kodiak, Cummins Cederberg conducted an extensive coastal engineering assessment for seven berths at the USCG facility, focusing on accommodating U.S. Coast Guard Destroyer Class cutters, including FRC, OPC, NSC, WMEC-39, and WLB classes. This project involved reviewing wind, wave, and current conditions for both fixed and floating docks, while performing static mooring analysis with Optimoor and dynamic analysis using MIKE 21, in adherence to PIANC and UFC guidelines. The assessments aimed to evaluate impact loads during vessel docking and ensure consistent design across all berths. The analysis informed the design and selection of mooring hardware, such as bollards and fenders.
Cummins Cederberg issued Basis of Design and Mooring Analysis reports, detailing mooring loads, berthing calculations, mooring arrangements, and structural recommendations for all facilities.
